Women Fitness Cycle

Menstrual cycle, physical activity and performance

Erasmus+ Sport, Cooperation Partnership

The challenge

Menstrual symptoms are one of the least addressed barriers to women's participation in physical activity, and most coaches have no training on the subject. The project combines a systematic review of the evidence with practical tools.

The digital component

An online educational programme for coaches and athletes, and a cycle tracking application for female athletes and practitioners that offers personalised recommendations for physical activity based on reported symptoms.

Project scope

The application and the online course are published and publicly available. Sport Innovation Hub is a consortium partner and the publisher of the application, and Universitas coordinates the project. The wider research programme continues, so this is not a statement that the whole project is complete.

Sport Innovation Hub's role

Partner in the consortium, contributing to the design and technical requirements of the tracking application and the online programme.

Show technical detail
  • Daily logging of cycle and symptoms with cycle phase estimation
  • Recommendation logic derived from the research work package, so that advice follows the evidence rather than generic content
  • Health data under GDPR special categories: explicit consent, data protection impact assessment, minimisation and pseudonymisation
  • Encryption in transit and at rest, user-controlled export and deletion
  • Companion online course integrated with the app content for coaches
  • Multilingual content across the consortium countries

How this applies to your organisation

If you collect physiological or health data from athletes, this is the kind of work we can take on: a protocol agreed with sport scientists, consent flows, a defined legal basis and feedback the athlete and the staff can use.
